Sensed Memories

Along the railroad tracks hundreds of miles from the sea. Far from the fish/damp/seaweed tang

I meet the ocean as the tar from the ties dissipates upward (especially in sear of summer)

Like an imagined boardwalk.  And I’m all

freedom of youth

salty skin

crisp t-shirt

tan edging on burn

cheap thrill rides

loud, tinny rock

games

caramel apples and saltwater taffy

imagining holding hands

limitless life and buddies

questions left to the adults

late afternoons spilling into hoped for endless nights

the cusp of adolescence and the unnamed ache, fear and coming changes

Wildwood by the Sea
