Lady in Hancock, MD

A laugh that felt like home
Carefree unconcerned about “image”

Like a bathrobed Sunday morning
A laugh
Not constrained by protocol or properness or any of the things that
Choke off much needed guffaws in the throat

In a laundro-mat full of strangers
Laughing at lost socks and
College kids who bring home bundles of dirty laundry
At packing apples and
Silly misunderstandings in a small town.

Was she an angel?
A saint…

Having lived the changes
Absorbed the losses and gains as they came and went

Simple joy that knows
Tomorrow will come

With its pain
Its joy
Its doubts
Its laughter.
